WELCOME TO THE SANDHURST (Kent) & DISTRICT
HURRAY – MEETINGS ARE BACK!
PLEASE NOTE – NEXT MEETING IS WEDNESDAY 13th OCTOBER (NOT 6th)
On 13th October we are pleased to have Neil Miller, Head Gardener at Hever Castle coming to talk to us about the famous roses of Hever. He is a very entertaining speaker.
Also back are the Monthly Competitions. Please see Competitions tab. Don’t forget if you are entering the fun competitions your entry must be in place by 7.50 p.m. for judging.
There will be a raffle and refreshments.
We are looking forward to seeing all our members who I know are keen to get going again and we have new members to welcome too who joined us during lockdown!
Guests are always welcome for just £2 per meeting.
On Wednesday 1st September we welcomed Daniele Altieri, garden designer, who gave us a talk to us about “Winter colour in your garden”.
We couldn’t believe our luck with the beautiful sunny evening on 4th August for our Summer Social. Over 40 members and guests enjoyed visiting four delightful gardens tucked away off the Rye road, and enjoying views of the windmill. It was great to see old friends and enjoy a drink and tasty eats provided by members. There are some photos on the slideshow, including the weigh-in for the potatoes in a bucket. Margaret and Brian emptied 21 buckets, ably assisted by granddaughter Rebecca. The winner this year was Ruth Elsdon with a magnificent 4lb 12 oz, followed in joint second place by Margaret Woodcock and Ros Maggs with 3lb 10oz and third place to Brian Woodcock at 3lb 7oz. The full list is shown on the slideshow.
Whether you have a large garden and are fairly knowledgeable about your plants, or have just a small plot and enjoy “pottering”, you can be sure of a friendly welcome with the Sandhurst & District Horticultural Society. For a very reasonable £10 annual subscription you will be able to enjoy meeting like minded people who are always keen to learn a bit more about making the most of their garden. Currently we have a membership of around 70 and we meet up on the first Wednesday of each month in the Old School Hall, Back Road, Sandhurst at 8.00 pm, but come earlier, from 7.30 pm to register, meet people and if you wish, take part in our fun monthly competitions. There is a sales table for plants and home grown seeds. We also have a good raffle and finish the evening with coffee or tea etc.
We have an Annual Programme and Competition Schedule that is circulated in December for the following year. As a general rule we have a good variety of speakers from January to June and a Social event during one of the summer months, and also an Annual Coach outing to an interesting and beautiful garden. The cost for the coach outing and admission is usually priced in the region of £25 per person. We also try to arrange a summer evening visit to a local garden. Then we go back to our meetings in the hall from September to December. We have a presentation of the competition trophies and AGM in December, followed by a glass of wine and refreshments. It’s all very informal and friendly.
Every year we have a hugely popular PLANT SALE in mid May and every TWO years we hold a Mini Show with a lovely variety of classes. Something for everyone.
If you would like to ‘dip your toe in the water’ without committing yourself, why not come along as a guest for just £2 per session.
