APRIL 2021 – Plant Sale news

First it was OFF, then it was ON but now it is OFF – at least as a formal gathering.
Despite lockdown measures easing on May 17th we are not able to have access to the Old School Hall. We toyed with a plan to hold the sale on the Lower Green, but realised this would not be practical as the overriding Government regulation states that gatherings of over 30 people are not allowed.

Therefore, we will revert to Garden Gate Sales as we had last year. Members are asked to let me know when their plants become available and I will ask Terry to list them on our web site MARKETPLACE TAB. Please make sure your plants are labelled and indicate a suitable price. (ros.maggs@yahoo.co.uk). We will ask members to phone before calling to collect plants. We hope to have any left over hardy perennials for sale at our summer social in August. You can let me know as soon as you have plants to sell, you don’t have to wait until mid May, and this will help to spread collection opportunities. If you have plants but it is difficult for you to do “garden gate sales” let me know and we will try to help.

But until we can meet up again in a group do check out the NGS web site to see which gardens are open with pre-booking and maybe you will be able to have a cup of coffee as well. I understand Merriments hope to open their garden soon, plus a new cafe.

FREE SEEDS
We have been given a wide variety of free vegetable seeds. If you want some please message me. They are:

Vegetable seeds: asparagus, aubergine, Brussels sprouts, carrots, cabbage, Chinese cabbage, cauliflower, celeriac, celery, chillis, cucumber (Marketmore), kale, lettuce, mint, onion, parsnip, parsley, pumpkin, radish, swede, turnip, tomato (Ailsa Craig). I also have my own Crown Prince squash, yellow patty pan squash, cannellini beans.
Flower seeds: honesty white, hollyhock dark red, Morning Glory (Grandpa Otts, purple).

I also have white Honesty little plants that can go out now, as well as a variety of tomato plants and cucumbers that will need growing on under protection.

Whether you have a large garden and are fairly knowledgeable about your plants, or have just a small plot and enjoy “pottering”, you can be sure of a friendly welcome with the Sandhurst & District Horticultural Society.  For a very reasonable £10 annual subscription you will be able to enjoy meeting like minded people who are always keen to learn a bit more about making the most of their garden.  Currently we have a membership of around 70  and we meet up on the first Wednesday of each month in the Old School Hall, Back Road, Sandhurst at 8.00 pm, but come earlier, from 7.30 pm to register, meet people and if you wish, take part in our fun monthly competitions. There is a sales table for plants and home grown seeds. We also have a good raffle and finish the evening with coffee or tea etc.

We have an Annual Programme and Competition Schedule that is circulated in December for the following year. As a general rule we have a good variety of speakers from January to June and a Social event during one of the summer months, and also an Annual Coach outing to an interesting and beautiful garden. The cost for the coach outing and admission is usually priced in the region of £25 per person. We also try to arrange a summer evening visit to a local garden.  Then we go back to our meetings in the hall from September to December. We have a presentation of the competition trophies and AGM in December, followed by a glass of wine and refreshments. It’s all very informal and friendly.

Every year we have a hugely popular PLANT SALE in mid May and every TWO years we hold a Mini Show with a lovely variety of classes. Something for everyone.

If you would like to ‘dip your toe in the water’ without committing yourself, why not come along as a guest for just £2 per session.
